I’m on the 8th floor and the elevators aren’t working. Ha!  Who needs a gym?  It’s not bad at all. The tap water is good, just keep it in the fridge in an open container to let the chlorine escape. I have good coffee, great wine from S.Africa, nice people in the building, and even a washing machine that sits right in the middle of the bath, drains into the sink, and plugs in via an extension cord in the bedroom. ;-)  They have no screens on the windows, and after two weeks I have yet to see a mosquito or a fly. How can that be?  I love COLOR (after 36 years in Fairbanks I learned to appreciate it) and the flat is very bland.  I’ll go get some fabulous African fabrics and change that soon, I promise.  HOVER YOUR MOUSE OVER A PHOTO TO SEE A CAPTION.

fancy digs! I’ll bet the tent camping with local critters will be much more interesting.

Interesting is right! Several people have stories about puff adders, but they claim that they aren’t aggressive; as long as you don’t step on them, they say you’ll be fine. In the desert, many people sleep under the stars. One faculty member insists that you never need a tent in the desert–only up in the more humid Caprivi area. But another equally well traveled faculty member said he always uses a tent. So that did it. I’m taking a tent. Some of the campgrounds will probably be crowded so surely hyenas leave one alone in such places… I hope.

Susan, your blog is informative and entertaining! Is water expensive in Namibia? What is the water source? Thanks for sharing your professional and personal experiences, especially everyday events. It makes it easy to relate to Namibia and its multiple cultures. I will enjoy following your adventures.
Say, I walk by your place about every other night and all looks good. I met your renters walking; they’re enjoying your cabin. Annie Armstrong

Hi Annie, I don’t know how you stumbled on the blog, but I’m glad you wrote. It’s a thrill to hear from folks back home. I think I found very good renters–lucky there. Glad you guys are enjoying the lovely walks around there. I lost both dogs in less than a year, and a walk just isn’t the same without them. I’ll have to get at least one dog when I return so I can enjoy the walks again. They say water is very expensive for most people, but here on campus, it is free. I asked about putting some lettuce and tomatoes in pots on my balcony, but people said I wouldn’t be able to afford to water the pots. But here on campus, it wouldn’t cost a thing, although it probably should! Susan

Carol Lewis and I play tennis and I asked her about you when I realized you were gone for a year. She sent me the connection to your blog. I rarely take the time to follow people’s blogs but your’s is engaging and I would enjoy hearing your experiences. So sorry about Toby and Oscar…I had been missing them.
